MacBook Clamshell Mode: Closed-Display Setup Guide

Run your MacBook with the lid closed and use an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. What you need, how to set it up, and how to look after the battery.

To use clamshell mode (Apple calls it closed-display mode), plug your MacBook into power, connect an external monitor, connect a keyboard and mouse or trackpad, then close the lid. The external screen becomes your main display. On battery power the Mac normally goes to sleep as soon as you close the lid, so keep it plugged in.

Clamshell mode turns your MacBook into a desktop computer: closed lid, external monitor, full-size keyboard and mouse.

What Is Clamshell Mode on Mac

Clamshell mode (Apple calls it "closed-display mode") lets a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air keep running with the lid shut. Everything you see is shown on the external monitor.

What You Need

The Mac only stays awake with the lid closed when all three of these are in place:

  1. Power: The MacBook is plugged in, either with the charger (MagSafe or USB-C) or through a monitor or dock that charges it. On battery alone, the Mac sleeps when you close the lid.
  2. External display: A monitor is connected (USB-C, Thunderbolt, DisplayPort or HDMI) and turned on.
  3. Keyboard and mouse: A Bluetooth or USB keyboard and mouse or trackpad is connected, so you can control the Mac and wake it up.

How to Set It Up

  1. Plug in the charger or connect the dock.
  2. Connect the monitor and wait until the desktop appears on it.
  3. Connect your keyboard and mouse.
  4. Close the lid. The monitor may go dark for a second or two, then the desktop comes back.

If the screen stays dark, press a key on the external keyboard or click the mouse to wake the Mac.

Heat with the Lid Closed

A MacBook gives off some of its heat through the keyboard and the top case, so a closed lid can make it run a little warmer.

  • MacBook Air: It has no fan. During long, heavy jobs such as video exports, it may slow itself down a bit sooner with the lid closed.
  • MacBook Pro: It has fans and handles closed-lid work well for everyday use. Keep the vents clear.

Protecting the Battery on a Permanent Desk Setup

A MacBook that sits plugged in all day stays at 100% charge for months, which can wear the battery faster. Turn on Optimized Battery Charging: open System Settings, go to Battery, find Battery Health and switch on Optimized Battery Charging. Your Mac then holds charging at about 80% when it expects to stay plugged in.

Keeping an Eye on Your Battery with Tegaro

The Tegaro Power tool lives in the menu bar and shows how your Mac is doing on power while it sits docked. Power stays free after the 14-day trial. It does not change when your Mac sleeps or how it charges.

Desk Setup Tip

A vertical laptop stand gives the closed MacBook more air around it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use MacBook clamshell mode without a charger?

Not reliably. On battery power the Mac normally sleeps when you close the lid. Plug it in, and connect a monitor and a keyboard or mouse.

Does closing the lid make the MacBook run hotter?

A little. Part of the heat leaves through the keyboard and top case, so a closed lid can make long, heavy work such as video exports slow down sooner, especially on a MacBook Air.

How do I stop my MacBook battery from wearing out when it is plugged in all the time?

Open System Settings, go to Battery, find Battery Health and turn on Optimized Battery Charging. It holds the charge at about 80% when your Mac expects to stay plugged in.
