Mac Dictation Not Working? Try These Fixes

Check Dictation, language, microphone input and the shortcut in a safe order before changing anything else.

If Mac Dictation is not working, turn on Dictation in System Settings > Keyboard, choose the right language and check its keyboard shortcut. Then open System Settings > Sound > Input to make sure the intended microphone is selected and responding. A blocked microphone permission can also stop a dictation app from hearing you.

When Dictation does nothing, the cause is often simple: it is turned off, listening to a different microphone, using a different language or waiting for another shortcut. Check those basics before reinstalling apps or changing system files.

1. Turn Dictation on and verify the language

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard. Find Dictation, make sure it is enabled, and select the language and region you intend to speak. Apple’s current Dictation troubleshooting guide lists language and shortcut checks first.

2. Test the Dictation shortcut

Use the shortcut shown in Keyboard settings while the cursor is inside a normal text field, such as Notes. If a shortcut conflicts with another app, choose a different one in the same settings area. Do not assume a tutorial’s shortcut matches your Mac: the setting is configurable.

3. Check microphone input

  1. Open System Settings > Sound > Input.
  2. Select the microphone you expect to use, especially if a headset, display or webcam is connected.
  3. Speak normally and watch for an input-level response.
  4. Raise input volume if it is too low, move closer to the microphone and reduce background noise.

With an external microphone, confirm its cable or wireless connection and its own mute control. A headset microphone can help in an echoing or noisy room.

4. Check privacy for a dictation app

Built-in macOS Dictation and a third-party dictation app are separate. If an app cannot hear you, review System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and allow that specific app. Then quit and reopen the app if it asks you to do so.

5. Check connection and processing details

Some macOS Dictation configurations may need an internet connection. Keyboard settings show whether voice input and transcripts for general text Dictation are processed on your device or sent to Siri servers. Check that explanation on your Mac instead of assuming all languages behave the same way.

Using Tegaro Dictation

Tegaro Dictation uses a downloaded speech model and works locally after that download. It still needs microphone permission and a usable input device. It is separate from the built-in Dictation setting, so test its shortcut in an ordinary text field after permission is granted. For setup details, see our local dictation guide.

Protect sensitive speech

Before dictating confidential information, read the processing note in Keyboard settings or the privacy documentation for the app you are using.
