How to Record Your Screen on Mac With Audio
A step-by-step guide to Mac screen recording: the whole screen or just one area, microphone sound, a start timer, and where the video is saved.
To record your screen on Mac, press Command + Shift + 5 to open the screenshot and recording toolbar, choose Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion, and click Record. To add your voice, click Options before you start and pick a microphone.
Screen recordings are handy for showing someone how to do something, reporting a problem, or making a short tutorial. Your Mac can do it without any extra app.
The Screen Recording Shortcut on Mac
Press Command + Shift + 5. A toolbar appears at the bottom of the screen with two video buttons:
- Record Entire Screen: The button with a screen icon. Click it, then click anywhere on the screen to start. With more than one display, click on the one you want to record.
- Record Selected Portion: The button with a dashed box. Drag the box over a window or any part of the screen you want to record.
How to Record Screen with Your Voice
Mac screen recordings often come out silent. The microphone is set to None until you choose one.
- Press
Command + Shift + 5to open the toolbar. - Click Options.
- Under Microphone, pick your Mac's built-in microphone or your headset.
- Turn on Show Mouse Clicks if you want a ring around the pointer when you click.
The Options menu also has a Timer (5 or 10 seconds before recording starts) so you can get ready.
Recording Just a Window or Part of the Screen
Recording a whole large display makes a big video file that is hard to send by email or chat. A smaller area keeps the file small and the text easy to read.
Choose Record Selected Portion, drag the corners of the box to fit your window, and click Record.
How to Stop the Recording
Click the Stop button in the menu bar at the top of the screen, or press Command + Control + Escape.
Where Screen Recordings Are Saved
Your Mac saves the video as a .mov file on the Desktop. To change the folder, open the toolbar, click Options, and choose a place under Save to, such as Documents or Downloads.
Quick Pictures and Text from the Screen with Tegaro
When a still picture is faster than a video, Tegaro Screenshots has you covered. It takes pictures, not video, so keep using Command + Shift + 5 for recordings.
- Area or window (⌘⇧2) and full screen (⌘⇧1): Take a picture with one shortcut.
- Text from screen (⌃⌥T): Drag a box over text on the screen and it is copied, ready to paste.
Tegaro needs no account, and what you capture stays on your Mac.
