How to Delete Apps on Mac Completely Without Residual Files

Remove apps from your Mac from Launchpad or Finder, run an app's own uninstaller when it has one, and clear the files an app leaves behind.

To delete an app on Mac, open Finder, go to Applications (Shift + Command + A), drag the app to the Trash, then empty the Trash. For apps from the App Store you can also open Launchpad, hold Option and click the X on the app. Some leftover files stay in your Library folder and can be removed by hand.

Most Mac apps are a single file that you can drag to the Trash. Some apps also leave small settings and temporary files behind. This guide shows how to remove both.

Method 1: Delete Apps in Launchpad

This works for apps you installed from the Mac App Store:

  1. Open Launchpad by clicking its icon in the Dock.
  2. Press and hold the Option (⌥) key until the icons start to jiggle.
  3. Click the small X on the app you want to remove.
  4. Click Delete to confirm.

If an app has no X, it was not installed from the App Store. Use Method 2.

Method 2: Delete Apps in Finder

This works for apps you downloaded from a website:

  • Open Finder and press Shift + Command + A to open the Applications folder.
  • Select the app.
  • Press Command + Delete, or drag the app to the Trash in the Dock.
  • Right-click the Trash and choose Empty Trash.

Method 3: Use the App's Own Uninstaller

Large software such as Adobe apps or Microsoft Office often adds extra helper programs. For these, look for an uninstaller:

  • Open the app's folder inside /Applications and look for a file called Uninstall.
  • Or check the developer's website for instructions. The official uninstaller removes everything the app added.

Remove Leftover Files

Dragging an app to the Trash keeps your settings and saved data, which is useful if you reinstall later. If you want a completely clean removal:

  1. In Finder, press Shift + Command + G.
  2. Type ~/Library/Application Support/, press Return, and move the folder named after the app to the Trash.
  3. Do the same for ~/Library/Preferences/ (files with the app's name in them) and ~/Library/Caches/.
  4. Empty the Trash.

Only delete items that clearly belong to the app you removed.

If the App Will Not Delete

If macOS says the app cannot be moved to the Trash because it is open, quit it first: right-click its Dock icon and choose Quit, or force quit it with Command + Option + Escape. Then try again.

See What Takes Space with Tegaro

Not sure which apps to remove? Disk analysis in Tegaro shows what takes up space on your disk, and it stays free after the 14-day trial. Cleaning up from inside Tegaro (Disk cleanup) needs Pro. Since version 0.1.32 Disk also has “Remove an app”: it lists what the app left in your Library and moves the app and the items you tick to the Trash, keeping what looks like logins or chats. That needs Pro after the trial too.

Built-in Apps

Do not try to delete the apps that come with macOS, such as Safari, Mail or Messages. They are protected and are part of the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my Mac let me delete an app?

The app is probably still open. Quit it, or force quit it with Command + Option + Escape, and try again. Apps that come with macOS, such as Safari, are protected and cannot be deleted.

Does dragging an app to the Trash remove all its files?

No. The app itself is removed, but its settings and saved data stay in your Library folder, in places like Application Support, Preferences and Caches. You can delete them by hand.

Can I reinstall an app after deleting it?

Yes. Apps from the App Store can be downloaded again from your purchase history. For other apps, download the installer again from the developer's website.
