Typed ghbdtn Instead of «привет» on Mac? How to Fix It

ghbdtn is «привет» typed with the English layout on: the letters sit on the same physical keys. To fix it, select the text, switch to the Russian input source and retype it, or paste it into a layout converter. If it happens often, Tegaro’s Layout tool corrects the last word or a selection with a hotkey, locally.

If you type in Russian and English, you have seen it: a line of Latin letters that should have been Cyrillic. The keys were right and the layout was wrong. Because both layouts share the same physical keys, the text can be recovered exactly.

Why ghbdtn means «привет»

On a Russian keyboard layout, the key labelled G is «п», H is «р», B is «и», D is «в», T is «е» and N is «т». Type those six keys with the English layout and you get ghbdtn. Two more examples: ltkfq lfkmit is «делай дальше», and rfr ltkf is «как дела». Punctuation keys can differ between layouts, so check commas and quotes after converting.

Fix it by hand

1. Select the wrong text instead of deleting it.
2. Switch the input source to Russian. Apple’s guide to writing in another language explains the Input menu and the shortcuts: Control-Space returns to the last source you used.
3. Retype it, or copy it into a layout converter and paste the result back.
4. Check names, addresses, code and mixed English and Russian text: a converter does not understand meaning.

Why full automation is risky

Some key sequences are valid in both layouts. Code, terminal commands, logins, abbreviations and technical terms must not be “fixed” just because the other reading is more common. Good automation looks at the shape of the word, dictionaries, the app and its own confidence, and is allowed to change nothing.
